Monday Sharp Money Card

Three Games, Not One Cheap Price

On August 4, Freddy Peralta made his Tampa Bay debut and lasted 3.2 innings, allowing seven earned runs. Six days later he is back on the mound and the Rays are still being laid at -157 for three units. That is the shortest card of the week, three games and six and a half units, and it is also the priciest. Every play on it needs at least 57 percent just to break even, and the steepest one needs almost 67.

A short card sharpens the question a handicapper actually has to answer. It is not which seven ideas to like. It is whether three prices, each of them demanding, are worth the number attached.

THE PRICE OF FAITH IN A BAD DEBUT

Peralta's overall 2026 line reads 5.37 ERA across 23 starts and 117.1 innings, but that number is really two different pitchers stitched together. Twenty-two of those starts came for the Mets, where he posted a 4.99 ERA over 113.2 innings. The other one came for Tampa Bay on August 4, and it was a disaster: 3.2 innings, seven earned runs, a start that alone carries a 17.18 ERA.

Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Freddy Peralta in his pitching delivery; Peralta allowed seven earned runs in 3.2 innings in his Rays debut on August 4 and starts again against the Athletics
Freddy Peralta posted a 4.99 ERA across 22 starts for the Mets before the trade. His only start in a Tampa Bay uniform produced seven earned runs in 3.2 innings. He gets a second look tonight at Sutter Health Park.
TB Moneyline  |  -157  |  3 units  |  Peralta vs Lopez, Sutter Health Park, 9:40pm ET

The case for laying -157 anyway is the opponent, not the pitcher. The Athletics are 47-71 with a run differential of -164, the worst mark in the sport, and they have gone 2-8 over their last ten games. Tampa Bay is 71-46, has won eight of its last ten, and carries a team ERA of 3.68 against Oakland's 5.41. Jacob Lopez starts for the Athletics at 5.64 with a 1.63 WHIP. On paper this is the widest talent gap on the board.

The number to respect before laying it: Sutter Health Park is where the Athletics hit best. Their home splits show 5.00 runs per game and a .790 OPS, against 3.69 runs and a .644 OPS on the road. Tonight's game is played there, not on the road, so the version of Oakland's offense in the building tonight is the good one, not the historically bad one. A -157 price bought on a full-season road split is buying a discount that will not be available at first pitch.

THE OVER THAT FADES ITS OWN ACE

Arizona's team total over 4.5 at -135 needs 57.4 percent to break even, and the pitcher on the mound for the Diamondbacks tonight is, on paper, the best argument against it.

ARI Team Total Over 4.5  |  -135  |  1.5 units  |  Hughes vs Soroka, Chase Field, 9:40pm ET

Michael Soroka has a 3.07 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP across 15 starts and 82 innings, comfortably his club's best starter. He does not face Arizona's hitters, he pitches for them, so his ERA has no direct bearing on how many runs his own lineup scores. But the split is real and it is worth stating plainly: in Soroka's 15 starts this season, the Diamondbacks have averaged 3.87 runs, nearly two-thirds of a run below their 4.51 season average. Whatever the cause, quieter offensive games have gone hand in hand with Soroka on the mound.

Recent form adds to the concern. Arizona has scored 10, 1, 4, 1 and 4 runs across its last five games, clearing 4.5 in exactly one of them.

What still makes the over playable is the pitcher on the other side. Colorado's team ERA sits at 5.48, one of the worst marks in the league, and Gabriel Hughes, their starter tonight, has made only five starts this season, a 4.25 ERA over 29.2 innings that is too thin a sample to lean on. His last outing, on August 4, went 5.1 innings and allowed five earned runs. Arizona is 63-56 and 6-4 in its last ten, and at home it scores 4.70 runs per game.

THE PUSH THAT COSTS -202

The most expensive number on the board is the Dodgers run line at -1, priced at -202, a 66.9 percent break-even.

LAD Run Line -1  |  -202  |  2 units  |  Cameron vs Skubal, Dodger Stadium, 10:10pm ET

Be exact about what this ticket is. It is not -1.5. At -1, a Dodgers win by exactly one run is a push, and the stake comes back. Los Angeles has to win by two or more to cash, loses only if it loses outright, and the tight one-run outcome refunds rather than beats the ticket. That third outcome is what the extra juice on -202 is buying.

Tarik Skubal is the reason the number is this high. His 2.79 ERA across 16 Detroit starts, with 116 strikeouts and a 0.91 WHIP over 96.2 innings, is one of the best pitching lines in the league, and his lone Dodgers start on August 4 held up: six innings, two earned runs, six strikeouts. Kansas City counters with Noah Cameron at a 4.37 ERA, and the Royals hit just 3.58 runs per game on the road with a .671 OPS, the weaker travelling offense in this matchup by a wide margin.

THE HONEST COUNTERPOINT

Start with the run line, because it carries the most risk relative to its price. Los Angeles has lost eight of its last ten games and has scored 1, 6, 3, 2 and 2 runs over its last five, an average of 2.8. Winning by two or more is a different and harder task than simply winning, and a Dodgers offense in a six-game funk is not obviously built to deliver a comfortable margin against even a modest Royals starter.

The Arizona over has the split data working against the exact matchup on the board. Soroka's own starts have coincided with the Diamondbacks' quietest offensive games of the season, and that is the pitcher starting tonight. Colorado's poor staff is the argument for the over. Soroka's presence on the other bench is the argument against it, and it belongs to the same game.

Even the Tampa Bay ticket is not automatic. The Athletics are historically bad, but they are considerably better in the building they play in tonight than their season-long road numbers suggest, and Peralta's only piece of information in a Rays uniform is a start that went badly wrong.

Six and a half units, three games, and a card that offers no discount anywhere on the board. Tampa Bay is buying the roster gap, not a favorable split. Arizona's over is buying a bad opposing staff while working around its own pitcher's history of quiet run support. The Dodgers ticket is buying a genuine ace and a push provision, at a price that assumes Los Angeles can find offense it has not shown in six days. None of the three is a gift, and pricing them any other way would be dishonest about what -157, -135 and -202 actually cost.
