Rays -1, Yankees ML, Two Unders

Two Games, Four Tickets, Most Of The Money

Eight tickets tonight, and the stake ladder tells you exactly where the conviction lives. Two games carry 15.22 of the card's 26.95 units at risk. In St. Petersburg it's the Rays -1 at -170 with the Athletics team total under 3.5 at -151 stacked on top of it. In Minneapolis it's the Yankees moneyline at -165 with the Twins team total under 3.5 at -152. Same idea both times: the favorite and the other side's scoreboard, riding on one pitching staff. When that staff does its job, both tickets cash together. When it doesn't, both usually go down together. That's not a hedge. It's a position.

Read it top down. The Rays run line is the biggest risk on the card at 5.10 units, just ahead of the Cardinals at 4.95, and at -170 it carries the steepest break even too, 62.96 percent. The one cushion: a one run Rays win is a push, not a loss. The Twins under sits alone on the 2.5 rung, a half unit above the Yankees moneyline it's paired with. That ordering matters, and I'll get to why. The Brewers and the Wrigley under are the small tickets, 3.8 units of risk combined.

TAMPA: RAYS -1 AND THE ATHLETICS UNDER 3.5

Athletics at Tampa Bay  |  Tropicana Field, 6:40 pm Eastern  |  Jack Perkins vs Griffin Jax

Start with the scoring side, because that's where the bigger stake is. Jack Perkins carries a 6.53 ERA over 103.1 innings with a 1.53 WHIP and 20 home runs allowed. Hitters are batting .269 off him. He's made 14 starts in 34 appearances, and his last trip to the mound against this exact lineup went 5 innings, 12 hits, 6 earned runs on August 12. That was the finale of a three game Rays sweep in West Sacramento, won 10 to 6, 12 to 4 and 8 to 4. Every one of those wins cleared two runs.

The Rays are 90 and 59, first in the AL East by 3.5 games, and 50 and 25 at home. Here's how the -1 grades out at home. Tampa has won by two or more in 36 of its 75 home games, won by exactly one 14 times, and lost 25. Take out the one run wins, which push, and the Rays have cashed this ticket 36 times in 61 decisions, 59 percent. The -170 price needs 62.96. So the base rate alone comes up short, and the gap is Perkins, plus an Athletics staff behind him with a 5.42 ERA, the worst of the four teams in this piece.

Now the under. The Athletics are a different lineup on the road. At home they hit .263 with a .782 OPS. Away from Sacramento it's .228 and .662, a 120 point drop, and they've scored 3.84 runs per road game. They've been held to three or fewer in 39 of 75 road games, 52 percent.

I'm not going to pretend 52 is 60. The price needs 60.16 percent, and the Athletics have been swinging it lately, 59 runs over their last 12 games. They also scored 4 or more in all three of those August losses to Tampa, though that was at home, where they're a .782 lineup. So the under needs the pitching to push that road rate up by eight points. That's why it's on the 2 unit rung and not the 3.

Griffin Jax has a 3.99 ERA across 20 starts and 31 appearances, 103 strikeouts in 99.1 innings, a 1.24 WHIP. He works short, usually about five innings, which hands the back half to a Rays staff with a 3.78 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. His last start was 5 innings of 2 hit, 1 run ball in Atlanta. The one before that was a 2.2 inning, 6 run mess against the Mets, so there's volatility here, and it's priced into the stake.

What the pair does together:

OutcomeNet
Rays win by 2 or more, Athletics held to 3 or fewer+5.00
Rays win by exactly 1, Athletics held to 3 or fewer+2.00
Rays win by 2 or more, Athletics score 4 or more-0.02
Rays win by exactly 1, Athletics score 4 or more-3.02
Athletics held to 3 or fewer, Rays lose-3.10
Rays lose, Athletics score 4 or more-8.12

The rows I like are the second and third. A one run Rays win with the under cashing still books +2.00, and a Rays blowout where the Athletics scratch across four finishes basically flat. The legs lean the same direction, too. Three or fewer Athletics runs makes a two run Rays win a lot easier to find.

MINNEAPOLIS: YANKEES MONEYLINE AND THE TWINS UNDER 3.5

New York at Minnesota  |  Target Field, 7:40 pm Eastern  |  Max Fried vs Bailey Ober

This one's all about one arm. Max Fried has a 2.73 ERA in 18 starts, a 0.99 WHIP, and hitters are batting .195 against him. He's allowed four home runs in 99 innings. On the road it gets better: 2.47 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, a .504 OPS against. Left handed hitters have a .391 OPS off him.

The Twins don't answer that well. Minnesota has a .678 OPS against left handed pitching and .740 against righties. They're 70 and 80, seven back in the Central and 5.5 out of the last wild card spot. The Yankees beat them 8 to 3 here last night. And they've scored three or fewer in 7 of their last 12 games and in 9 of 18 since August 25.

Here's the honest number, though. In Fried's 18 starts, Yankees opponents have been held to three or fewer 11 times, 61.1 percent. The under needs 60.32. That's thin, and it's the reason this is a Fried bet and not a Twins bet. At Target Field specifically, Minnesota's averaging 4.59 runs and has been held to three or fewer in only 31 of 76 home games. Without Fried on the mound, this is a pass.

The other thing to know about Fried: his last two starts went 3.2 and 3.1 innings. He allowed one run in each, but the Yankees bullpen covered a lot of outs. That's fine for the under, because the Yankees staff has a 3.22 ERA and has allowed 555 runs in 150 games, the best run prevention of the four teams in these two games. It's less fine for the moneyline, which is exactly why the under sits a half unit higher.

The moneyline has its own problem, and his name's Bailey Ober. His full season line is a 4.28 ERA, but at Target Field it's 3.16 with a 1.07 WHIP, and on the road it's 5.84. The Yankees are 45 and 31 away from home but only hit .230 with a .686 OPS on the road. At -165 you need 62.26 percent. So the ML is a 2 unit ticket and the under is the 2.5.

OutcomeNet
Yankees win, Twins held to 3 or fewer+4.50
Twins held to 3 or fewer, Yankees lose-0.80
Yankees win, Twins score 4 or more-1.80
Both lose-7.10

Compare that to Tampa. The Minneapolis pair risks 7.1 units to win 4.5. Tampa risks 8.12 to win 5.0, and its worst split costs 3.10 where Minneapolis tops out at 1.80. Every leg in both pairs is priced at -150 or worse, so a single miss costs more than a single hit pays. Tampa has the push cushion and the weaker opposing starter. Minneapolis has the better pitcher.

THE REST OF THE CARD

Cardinals ML, -165 to win 3

San Francisco at St. Louis  |  Busch Stadium, 7:45 pm Eastern  |  Blade Tidwell vs Andre Pallante

The second biggest risk on the board at 4.95 units. Andre Pallante is 12 and 6 with a 3.45 ERA over 146 innings and 26 starts. Blade Tidwell has a 4.82 ERA and is 0 and 2, with 7 starts in 15 appearances. The Giants are 62 and 89. The Cardinals are only 75 and 76, but this is about the matchup on the mound, and it's lopsided.

Guardians ML, -149 to win 2

Chicago at Cleveland  |  Progressive Field, 6:40 pm Eastern  |  Chris Murphy vs Foster Griffin

Foster Griffin is 15 and 5 with a 3.65 ERA over 162.2 innings. Chicago counters with Chris Murphy, who's made 2 starts in 31 appearances and thrown 32 innings total. The White Sox lead the Central at 77 and 73, 1.5 games up on the 76 and 75 Guardians, so the second game of this set moves the division.

Brewers -1, -180 to win 1.5

Milwaukee at Pittsburgh  |  PNC Park, 6:40 pm Eastern  |  Jacob Misiorowski vs Lake Bachar

Jacob Misiorowski: 1.95 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, 236 strikeouts in 161.1 innings. The Brewers are 93 and 57. Lake Bachar is a 3.52 ERA swingman with 9 starts in 48 appearances, so Pittsburgh's pen is covering a lot of this. At -180 the price is steep, but a one run win pushes, and behind that arm it's a fair small ticket.

Braves/Cubs Under 8.5, -110 to win 1

Atlanta at Chicago  |  Wrigley Field, 7:40 pm Eastern  |  Martín Pérez vs Kevin Gausman

Martín Pérez has a 3.08 ERA over 131.2 innings. Kevin Gausman's at 4.60 but with 171 strikeouts in 166.1 innings. It's the smallest rung, and it should be. Wrigley totals move with the wind, and that's a one unit kind of read.

HOW THE NIGHT CAN GO

The two featured games account for 15.22 units of risk and 9.5 units to win. Everything else is 11.73 at risk to win 7.5. A clean sweep is +17.00. The realistic good night is Tampa and Minneapolis both landing together, which alone is +9.50, enough to absorb a Cardinals loss and still clear four and a half units.

The bad night is simple too. Perkins finds a rhythm, Fried leaves in the third, and the Athletics and Twins each put up four. That's the scenario the ladder was built around, and it's why neither under sits on the top rung.
